Scientists at Tomsk Polytechnic University and the local Research Institute of Cardiology are developing a new method of treating atherosclerosis using a coronary stent with a biodegradable coating,  reported  the website of Vesti-Tomsk, a regional TV and radio broadcasting company.

The effort is aimed at developing a nanomaterial capable of destroying the components of atherosclerotic plagues that grow inside a blood vessel. The developers want to create a coronary stent that would be inserted into a damaged vessel and then opened there to ‘squeeze out’ a plaque, thus preventing complete vessel occlusion (clogging). The new nanomaterial is not only expected to reduce the plaque to molecules but also remove its residue from the human body.

Lab tests are reported to have shown interaction between the nanomaterial and cholesterol molecules. With a Russian patent under their belt the Siberian developers are seeking an international patent and putting together advanced in vitro lab tests.
